Blade Selection Matrix

Choose the correct scroll saw blade or bandsaw width based on project thickness and cut radius:

What is scroll saw woodworking?

Scroll saw woodworking involves using a small, motorized machine with a fine, reciprocating blade to cut intricate profiles, shapes, and internal fretwork in wood. It allows woodworkers to create delicate filigree, portrait silhouettes, puzzle structures, and layered overlay panels with high precision.

For beginners, we recommend starting with simple silhouettes and thick-line fretwork (10–20 cuts). Our beginner blueprints are designed with sweeping paths and fewer inside corners to build confidence in blade control. Each plan includes a printable PDF template and thickness suggestions.

Choosing the right blade depends on wood thickness and curve tightness. Standard plain-end skip-tooth or double-tooth blades from size #2 to #5 are suitable for 1/4" to 3/4" hardwoods. Always match the blade size to avoid flexing and burning.

How to cut intricate fretwork safely

For detailed fretwork, drill small entry holes (around 1/16" or 1.5mm) in all waste areas. Always cut the innermost details first, working your way outward. This keeps the wood block structurally stable and easier to support while cutting.

Preventing wood burn during cuts

Avoid pushing the wood too hard against the blade. Use clear packaging tape over the paper template — the heat generated melts the tape adhesive, acting as a natural lubricant that reduces friction and wood charring.
